I discovered I Am In Eskew through the Rusty Quill network of podcasts, probably through an ad they aired during The Magnus Archives. If there is one thing to know about me, it's that I love stories about weird architecture and sentient buildings and so on and so forth, so I correctly assumed it'd be right up my alley.
I've seen people complain about how the narration in this show is too monotonous and that it makes for a hard listen given the longer episodes, and I agree that it can be, but that was never a problem for me. I find Ware's voice to be a perfect match for both the character he's embodying and the story he's telling. Every episode swings pretty hard, starting from the very first one (knuckle tats that say MSWHY / MRHOW), and as you go along, you find yourself almost morbidly looking forwards to seeing what new horror the city has in store. The thing about Eskew, I find, is that it loves David — how terrible! — but it is genuine in its love and its horror, something which I find set sit apart from its contemporary weirdcities. This ask answred by Tumblr user notbecauseofvictories pretty aptly summarizes my own thoughts on how the world of Eskew operates.
Eskew is also a holder of an award in my head for one of a very small amount of stories which genuinely depressed me so much that I had to stop going for a little while. Episode 19 ("Bug") is the one that did it for me, and I was turned off the show for a little while, not out of dislike, but because it made me so upset. I did eventually finish, though, and loved every second — I've been meaning to relisten for a while now.
[...] Eskew is a city of steep and winding streets, where the rain seemingly never stops and the buildings change at will. David, the narrator, is from our world, but has found himself trapped in this living, murderous city, unable to find his way home. With escape impossible, David documents his bizarre, often mind-bending experiences in a series of endless recording, hoping that someone – anyone – will hear them. In this twisted city, nothing is what it seems, and the strange population that David meets there – the journalist, obsessed with the letters she receives, the architect who won’t talk about the building they designed, the mysterious woman intent on burning Eskew to the ground – know more than they let on.
