One of my friends introduced me to Behind the Bastards! She was telling me about the Nicolae Ceaușescu episodes and I decided to give it a listen. I ended up really loving it (obviously), and I've been a regular listener since. It's a super accessible springboard into convoluted historical and political topics, and I highly recommend it. The guests brought onto the show make each series unique, and Evans knows exactly how to blend humour, ridicule, and grim fact to make for an entertainingly informative hour.
One thing that makes me laugh is that there's be a lot of reviews claiming BtB is biased or downright full of lies because Evans is pretty openly and obviously a leftist. One memorable review said that the show should be sued for calling Ben Shapiro a racist (?!). It always struck me as silly given that he's written a book called "After the Revolution" and hosts It Could Happen Here, the latter of which is best listened to rather than explained. Anyway, it's a great show for anyone, especially if you have an interest in history.
There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
It feels weird to have favourite BtB episodes, but there are some I enjoy an extra amount:
- Kissinger (6 parts)
- A Complete History of the Illuminati (6 parts)
- MKUltra: When The CIA Tried to Destroy Free Will (4 parts)
- G. Gordon Liddy: The Fascist Behind Watergate (6 parts)
